Booster Club Physical Night Feb. 23
The Booster Club Physical Night will be from 6-9 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Freshman Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
BHS students get in free with students IDs
Until the end of the winter sports season, any BHS student (grades 9-12 ) may enter any regular season home basketball game or wrestling meet for free with their student ID. The student ID must be presented at the event to enter for free, or the student will have to pay the $4 admission.
Lady Pirates basketball rolls over KC Harmon
The Lady Pirates basketball team went head-to-head against KC Harmon Jan. 25 in the opening game of the Louisburg Tournament. BHS walked away with a 66-33 victory. The Lady Pirates scored 18 points in the first quarter carrying a lead of 18-7 going into the second quarter, where they scored 30 more points, giving them a 48-14 lead and new school record for most points scored in a quarter. The Lady Pirates JV team played most of the second half and salted the game away. The Lady Pirates were lead by Danielle Wiese (17 points), Kelsey Simmons (16 points) and Katie Yager (10 points). BHS will continue in the tournament when they take on Louisburg in the semi-finals Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Girls basketball fares well at Raytown South
The Lady Pirates needed a big fourth quarter come back to claim their ninth win of the season. That is exactly what they did against Raytown South Jan. 20. The girls had a slow pace throughout the game, leaving them down 43-34 going into the fourth quarter. BHS fought back from being down 11 points in the fourth quarter. It started with a 3-pointer by Kelsey Simmons, two lay-ups by Precious Vassol, followed by two more 3-pointers by Katie Yager, leading the team to a three point lead with one minute to go in the game. The girls continued with good free-throw shooting and walked away with a 56-51 win.
The JV team also played at Raytown South Jan. 20. After leading by two points at half, they ended up winning by over 20 points. Brittany Cole led the team scoring 22 points and Erin Brouhard scored 18 points.

Lady Pirates defeat Ray-Pec
The Lady Pirates improved to 8-4 on the season with a solid, 58-49 win versus Raymore-Peculiar Jan. 19.
The Pirates started slowly, but held a 33-18 advantage at the half. They extended their lead to 15 by late in the third quarter and cruised to the win with good ball handling in the final stanza.
Danielle Wiese led the way, scoring 20 points, while adding 10 rebounds, four assists, five steals, and three blocks. Precious Vassol returned to the line-up after missing the previous two games, scoring 12.
Wrestlers fall to Fort Osage
The BHS wrestlers hosted their first home dual Jan. 20, where they faced off with the Fort Osage Indians. A slow start hampered the Pirates, who lost 27-43. After their 3-34 start, the Pirates rallied by winning four of the last five matches by pin. The loss brings the Pirates' conference dual record to 1-1.

The Belton High School wrestlers competed in their first conference dual Jan. 12 at North Kansas City High School, coming away with a 54-13 win over the Hornets. Enroute to the win, the Pirates won all but three matches.

Varsity boys fall to Staley
The varsity boys basketball team dropped a tough contest at home Jan. 12 against Staley, 49-52, when a last-second three-point attempt missed its target. Senior Skyler Hibdon led the scoring with 12 points.
Lady Pirates cruise to 52-31 win
The Lady Pirates wanted to avenge a tough loss last year to Park Hill South and did just that when the teams met Dec. 21.
The Pirates held a slim, 9-7 lead after the first quarter, but scored 17 in the second period and held Park Hill South to just three points to take a 26-10 halftime lead. While the offense struggled in the third quarter, the defense did not, holding Park Hill South to nine points and taking a 35-16 advantage into the final period.
The Pirates were led by Precious Vassol's 17 points and seven steals. Kelsey Simmons added 13 points and Danielle Wiese contributed eight. Wiese also had 16 rebounds, five steals, four blocks and five assists.
The win brought the Lady Pirates' record to 6-2 on the season.
The JV squad lost its first game of the year, bringing their record to 6-1.
Wrestlers finish ninth at Ray-South
The Pirate wrestling team competed the weekend of Dec. 19 in the Raytown South Holiday Tournament, where as a team they finished ninth out of 16 teams.

Whitney, the No. 1 ranked Missouri wrestler at 189, faced the No. 1 wrestler from Kansas, Jonathan Truman. Whitney notched a 7-5 win to keep his perfect record intact at 21-0. It was his third straight first place tournament finish for the season.
The Pirates will host their first conference dual on Jan. 6 versus Fort Osage.
Boys fall to Lee's Summit West
The Pirates boys basketball team jumped to a 12-9 first-quarter lead Dec. 16, but couldn't hang on and fell to the Lee's Summit West Titans, 54-28. Sophomore Joston Branch led all scorers with 17 points.
Lady Pirates improve record with win over Fort Osage
The Lady Pirates basketball team rallied to notch a 60-50 conference win over Fort Osage Dec. 14. The Pirates jumped to a 13-8 lead by the end of the first quarter, but fell behind in the second quarter and trailed 19-26 at the half. The Pirates got hot in the third quarter, scoring 20 points to take a 39-35 lead into the fourth. They salted away the win in the fourth quarter, making 17of 25 free throw attempts. Kelsie Simmons led the Pirates in scoring with 22 points. Pecious Vassol contributed 20 and and Danielle Wiese added 17. The win brings the team's record to 4-2.
The JV squad was also victorious. Their 32-26 win kept their perfect record intact, at 4-0.
The teams will host Raytown South Dec. 17.
Wrestlers compete at LSN tourney
Belton wrestlers competed in the Lee's Summit North tournament the weekend of Dec. 12, bring home three top-four finishes.
Glendal Whitney finished first at 189, compiling a perfect 6-0 record for the weekend. Deric Fenzl finished second at 171, losing a very close finals match. Kevin Estell rounded out the Pirate medalists with a fourth-place finish at 285.
The JV squad wrestled well for the second consecutive week. Seven Pirate wrestlers brought home medals, including: Jesse Archer, first, 140; Cameron Myers, first, 145; Dalton Hillard, second, 152; Kendrick King, second, 160; Nic Taylor, first, 171; Josh Bruce, first, 215; and Zach Evans, second, 285.
Lady Pirate swimmers open season
The Lady Pirate swimming and diving team opened its season Dec. 8 with a victory over Center and dual loss to Pembroke Hill. Top three finishes for the Pirates included:

Whitney named to All-State team
Pirate running back Glen Whitney was named as a member of the All-State Second Team football squad during the weekend of Dec. 5.
Wrestlers finish fifth at Neosho
The Pirate wrestling team competed in the Neosho wrestling tournament the weekend of Dec. 5, finishing fifth. Five Pirates finished in the top four of their weight classes. They were: Glen Whitney, 189, first; Austin Sims, 215, second; LeRoy Barnes, 125, second; Josh Knight, 119, fourth; and Kevin Estell, 285, fourth.
All nine competitors on the JV squad finished in the top four of their weight classes. Congratulations to Courntney Cornell, who was recently named to the Cass County All-County volleyball team.
Lady Pirates open season in winning fashion
The Lady Pirates basketball team opened its 2009-10 campaign with a 82-70 win over William Chrisman Nov. 30 in the Fort Osage Tournament. The Pirates started quickly, jumping to a 21-16 lead by the end of the first quarter. They took a 40-36 lead into halftime. Kelsey Simmons was the leading scorer for the Pirates, with 32 points, setting a new school record for most points in a game. Danielle Wiese and Precious Vassol also were in double-digits scoring 21 and 13, respectively. Callie Porter added nine points. Coach Aaron Quinley said there girls were very excited with such a great win, and they showed great effort against a very good opponent.
The Pirates will face Kansas City Central in the tournament semifinals on Dec. 2.
Winter strength and conditioning
Winter strength and conditioning sessions have been scheduled for the coming months in the new training facility at the new stadium and at Belton High School.
Three winter sessions will be Nov. 30 through Feb. 26.
Session 1 will meet from 3-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the new facility and will focus on weight training.
Session 2 will meet from 3-4 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday at Belton High School and will focus on sport-specific agility and plyometric jump training for all female athletes.
Session 3 will meet from 3-4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday at the new facility and will focus on sport-specific agility training for all male athletes.
Sessions will also be available for all athletes in grades 7-12 who are not currently in a winter sport.

Runners maintain solid grades
Congratulations to members of the BHS cross country team, who maintained high standards in the classroom while competing this season. The boys team averaged a 3.3 grade point average during the season, while the girls averaged a 3.8.
Ryan makes All-Metro team
Senior Cross Country runner Trey Ryan was recently selected to the All-Metro Honorable Mention Cross Country Team by the Greater Kansas City Cross Country Coaches' Association.

Ryan finishes 46th at state meet
Belton High School senior Trey Ryan ran a fantastic race Nov. 7 at the State Cross Country Meet in Jefferson City. Running in the mid-day sun, Trey placed 46th out of 162 runners, placing 15th among the Kansas City-area runners.
Swimmers finish fourth at conference
Congratulations to the boys swim team for its fourth-place finish at the varsity conference swimming championships. It took a total team effort as all 14 boys scored points for BHS. Out of 31 races, the boys swam an amazing 90 percent season best times and dropped a total of 225 seconds! Team members are Jacob Blankenship, Eli Chastain, Steven Coleman, Irving Garzon, Robert Goodwin, Geoff Grigg, Jeffery Hartnett, Austin Hiner, Richie Murkin, Travis Tarry, Nic Taylor, Patrick Thompson, Lucas Villaverde, and Nick Willey.
Ryan qualifies for state cross country meet
Congratulations to senior Trey Ryan who has qualified for the state cross country meet Saturday, Nov. 7 in Jefferson City. Trey is the first pirate to qualify since 2003.
Lady Pirates end record-breaking season
Congratulations to the Lady Pirates Volleyball team on its success this season. The team ended with a 21-12-1 record -- the most wins in school history. Along the way, the Pirates set a number of team records, including most kills in a season, 714; serving aces, 234; serving percentage, 92.3 percent. The girls finished in the top three of each of their tournaments this season as well as finishing second in conference with the team's only conference losses to Lee's Summit West, who is ranked second in the state.
There were a number of individual awards as well.
All-conference -- Courtney Cornell and Sarah McMilian, first team; Haley Coovert, second team; Greta Bobbitt, Jordan Catanzaro, and Desiree Johnson, honorable mention.
All-regional -- Courtney Cornell, first team; Sarah McMilian, second team.
All-district -- Courtney Cornell, second team; Jordan Catanzaro, honorable mention.
Courtney Cornell broke Stephanie Middleton's (class of 1995) kill record of 204 with 214 kills on the season. She also broke the career kill record and currently has 501. Courtney also surpassed the career digs record set by Kimber Yadon from 2003-2006 and now has 881. Courtney is just a junior.
The 6-2 setting combo of Karlee Bobbitt and Haley Coovert combined for a team record 650 assists on the season.
The team will miss its two seniors Karlee Bobbitt and Aleta Lucero next year.
Winter sports parent meeting
Parents of athletes in girl’s basketball, boy’s basketball, girl’s swimming and wrestling will have a meeting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1 in the Forum at Belton High School. This meeting is for parents to fill out forms and to review procedures for winter sports. All parents of winter sports athletes are urged to attend this informative meeting.
Ryan advances to cross country sectionals
Congratulations to Senior Trey Ryan who placed 19th at the District Cross Country meet on Saturday, Oct. 24 and has advanced to the sectional meet this upcoming Saturday. The meet will be held at Longview Community College, with his race at 10 a.m.
Lady Pirates claim second in conference
Congratulations to the Belton Volleyball team for its Oct. 20 victory over North Kansas City, 25-22, 25-22. That victory secured sole possession of a conference runner-up finish behind two-time defending state finalist Lee’s Summit West. It also ran the season record to 20-11-1 which is a team record and most wins in school history. Come support the Lady Pirates this Thursday, Oct. 22 at home for senior night versus Fort Osage.

Lady Pirates finish third in Harrisonville
The Lady Pirates Volleyball team finished third in the Harrisonville 10 team tournament the weekend of Oct. 17, taking home a top three finish in all three tournaments for the first time since 1995. The Pirates’ only loss coming at the hands of eventual tournament champions Ray-Pec. The Lady Pirates’ record is now 19-11-1. Courtney Cornell led the Pirates with 41 kills. The best attacking percentages on the weekend came from junior middle hitter Desiree Johnson, who had 26 kills and nine errors on only 59 attempts for a .288 hitting percentage and a .441 kill percentage. Haley Coovert and Karlee Bobbitt combined for 120 assists on the day and set a new season record for assists in a season with over 600 with several contests remaining in the season. The Pirates’ core group of attackers; Sarah McMilian, Courtney Cornell, Desiree Johnson, Jordan Catanzaro, Aleta Lucero and Logan Allen have combined for well over 600 kills, setting another school record, and are on pace to reach 700. The previous record was 560 kills in a season. The Pirates are looking to lock down the conference runner up finish behind Lee’s Summit West with one more conference win this week. The Lady Pirates will host North Kansas City on Tuesday and will celebrate Senior Night against Fort Osage on Thursday.

Congratulations to the Lady Pirates Softball team for its first district victory over Warrensburg Oct. 7. Enroute to the 8-0 win, Carly Jo Scott, Ashley Cobern, Desiree Johnson, Kelsey Schifferdecker, and Mckenzie Sokolaski each had two hits on the night.
In addition to a good night at the plate, Schifferdecker struck out 20 of 21 batters.
Pirates softball will continue into districts Oct. 8 against Lee's Summit in Warrensburg.
Porter advances to state golf tourney
Congratulations to Callie Porter who is going to the state golf tournament on Oct 19-20. She tied for 9th place overall Oct. 6 at the district tournament. Porter was also named 1st Team all-conference, Brooke Collins and Kelsey Maurer were named to 2nd team all-conference, and Nikki Hutchison earned honorable mention honors.

Volleyball team finishes second in Grandview tourney
The Lady Pirates volleyball team finished second in the eight-team Grandview tournament during the weekend of Oct. 3. The tourney featured three district champions from last season and two current state-ranked teams.
Belton upset Platte County (17-1 and ranked fifth in the state) in the semifinals in straight sets. The Pirates came up short in the finals against state-ranked St. Pius X and finished in second place.
Junior outside hitter Courtney Cornell led the team in kills (21) and aces (16). The best attacking performance came from junior middle attacker Sarah McMilian. She registered 19 kills and only one attack error, while compiling nine blocks. She was also perfect from the service line in 31 attampts and had four aces.
Soccer player earns elite award
Congratulations to BHS soccer player and Norwegian exchange student Stian Lockert, who was included in the Western Missouri Elite 11 the week of Sept. 30. Lockert scored four goals in two games in the soccer tournament hosted by the Pirates.

Schifferdecker named Star's player of the week
Congratulations to BHS softball pitcher Kelsey Schifferdecker for being named the Kansas City Star's player of the week for the week of Sept. 28. An article featuring her acheivement will be published in The Star on Wednesday, Sept. 30.
Volleyball team defeats NKC Hornets
Congrats to the Lady Pirates volleyball team on its defeat of the North Kansas City Hornets for the first time in program history. NKC won 25 matches last year and won the district title. The Pirates played a flawless match and won 25-23, 25-21. Sarah McMilian led the attack with 10 kills and no errors, followed by 8 kills from Courtney Cornell. Belton currently stands at 3-1 in conference play, with the only loss coming in a three-game match to Lee's Summit West who is currently undefeated and ranked second in the state.
Lady Pirates defeat Raytown
The Lady Pirates volleyball team defeated Raytown Sept. 22 for another conference win, 25-19, 25-10. Greta Bobbitt led the way passing with a 2.6. Courtney Cornell led the girls offensively with 11 kills, followed by Sarah McMilian with 7 kills and Jordan Catanzaro with 5.

Volleyball team finishes third at Platte County
The Lady Pirates volleyball team finished third at the Platte County Invitational Saturday, Sept. 19. The Pirates were led offensively by junior middle hitter Sarah McMilian, with 39 kills and only 8 errors on 94 attacks for a .330 attack percentage and a .415 kill percentage. Junior outside hitter Courtney Cornell added 35 kills for a .330 kill percentage. Junior Greta Bobbitt led the team serving with 54 serves for a 96 percent serving percentage and also led the team defensively with a 2.15 passer rating and 30 digs. There was a four-way tie for the team lead in aces, with Karlee Bobbit, Jordan Catanzaro, Haley Coovert and Courtney Cornell each serving eight aces. Senior Aleta Lucero led the team in blocks with three solo and 12 assisted.
Softball team takes third at Platte County
The Belton softball team finished in third place at the Sept. 19 Platte County tournament. Enroute to the third-place finish, the Lady Pirates went 3-1, defeating Park Hill, Staley, and Blue Springs. Their lone loss came at the hands of St. Joe Lafayette.
Volleyball squad opens season
The Belton volleyball team opened its season with a tough 23-25 loss to the Lee's Summit Tigers on Sept. 3. That was followed by the home opener on Sept. 8 against two-time defending state finalist Lee's Summit West, currently ranked second in the state. The Pirates lost a close first game, 20-25, but came fighting back to take the second game, 25-22 before falling in the third.
More recently, the Pirates have won three straight matches, including a conference win over Raytown South on Tuesday, 25-14, 25-22.
The Pirates are on the road Sept. 17 against the Ray-Pec Panthers.
Tennis team places third
The BHS girls JV tennis team placed third at the Excelsior Springs JV tournament on Sept. 9. The team's third-place finish was its best performance ever at the annual contest.
Erin Kauser took third place in A flight singles. The doubles teams of Diana Luna and Bridget Tapia, and Elin Ohman and Lauren Cook both took second place in their respective flights.
The Belton V girls host their own tournament at Yeokum on Friday, Sept. 11.
Schifferdecker hurls perfect game
BHS sophomore Kelsey Schifferdecker threw a perfect game Sept. 8 and recorded 12 strikeouts in the Lady's Pirates' victory over Warrensburg.

Cass County Cross Country Invitational set for Sept. 5
The Belton High School Cross Country Team will play host to several area schools at the Cass County Cross Country Invitational Sept. 5.
“Lucky 13” will take place at the Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and all races will be two miles long. The cost will be $45 per girls and boys team, or $80 for both. If a team has less than 10 runners, the cost will be $10 per runner.
Participating schools currently include Archie, Cass-Midway, Drexel, Harrisonville, Pleasant Hill and Ray-Pec, of Cass County; Barstow, Center, Clinton, Grain Valley, Grandview, Hickman Mills, Northeast, Raytown and Smith-Cotton, from other surrounding counties.
JV girls and JV boys will begin events at 9 a.m. followed by the Newcomers Race at 9:30. Varsity girls will start at 10 a.m. followed by the varsity boys at 10:30 a.m. The varsity races will be limited to seven runners.
The Fun Run will conclude the morning's events at 11 a.m. when students without school issued uniforms may compete in a one and two mile run. Over 30 awards will be given out at 11:30 a .m. for each race.
Those interested in participating are asked to register online. Entries are due Sept. 3.

Belton Pirate football fundraiser
The Belton High School Football team will host an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Aug. 16 at Applebee’s. The cost will be $5 per person. Pirate fans will have the opportunity to talk to players and coaches about the upcoming season, new stadium and the previous night’s Purple and White game.
Fall sports meeting
The pre-season fall sports parent meeting will be at 6 p.m., Aug. 9 in the lower gym. Both parents and athletes are asked to attend. The meeting will begin with an all sport meeting with George Shrum, Belton High School athletic director, followed by a breakout session in which all sports will have individual parent meetings.

Cheerleaders to compete
The Belton High School Varsity and JV cheerleading squads will travel to Lee's Summit North High School for the KC Regional High School Cheerleading Competition Aug. 6 and 7.
The coed varsity squad will compete Aug. 6 at 7:25 p.m. and JV will compete Aug. 7 at 9:15 a.m. Also, Aug. 7, the all-girl varsity team will compete at 10:10 a .m.
Admission to the competition is $5.
Blitz night planned for Aug. 14
The BHS football program will host "Blitz Night," a kickoff for the Pirate Card fundraiser, on Friday, Aug. 14. Members of the team will be selling the cards, which offer discounts at local merchants.
Purple and White Game
The Belton Pirates Purple and White Game will be at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 15 at Belton High School.
For admission, fans are asked to bring one non-perishable food item to the event.

The Belton High School basketball program will offer a summer camp for students wanting to hone their skills or learn more about the sport.

Athletes set new strength and conditioning records
Several Belton athletes have made it to the top five of all-time record boards for Belton High School.
Demaurius Andrews set the new school record with a 38 1/2 inch vertical jump. He improved 6 1/2 inches since testing last spring.
Claire Sylvara set the new female school record with a 28 inch vertical jump. She also made the top five all-time in bench press, 145 pounds, and in the squat, 240 pounds.
Precious Vassol set the all-time school record for bench press, 175 pounds, and squat, 325 pounds. She also made the most improvement of any female athlete by increasing her bench press by 55 pounds and her squat by 120 pounds in one year. She also increased her vertical jump to 26 inches for fourth on the all-time list.
Jessical Campbell is tied for fifth on the list, with a 240 pound squat.
Casey Lewis was the only male athlete this year to make the elite 1,000 pound club, which is a combined total of bench, squat and hang clean.
A new addition to the Belton Strength and Conditioning Program is "Pirate Power Points." Six areas are assessed -- three for strength, and three for agility. The top femail and top overall points leader is Precious Vassol with 550 points. The top male is Tyler Burks with 470 points.
Summer strength and conditioning
The Belton Athletics Department is offering a free summer strength and conditioning program for all current 7th through 11th graders in the school district. There will also be a separate early-morning session for any Belton graduate that is a current collegiate athlete and needs a place to train for the summer.

Pirate wrestlers make all-conference team
The all- conference wrestling team was announced on Feb. 23, with several Pirates making the list. The Pirates tied for the most overall, 10, and most first team (four), all conference wrestlers. Josh Knight (112), Deric Fenzl (145), Taylor Powers (152), and Glendal Whitney (189) each were first team all conference. Dakota Croft (103), Tyler Catanzaro (135), and Josh Bruce (215) were 2nd team. Dominique Neverdusky (119), Jerrell Merren (140), and Jimmy Mann (160) were Honorable Mention all-conference as well. For the second year in a row, the Pirates had an athlete earn wrestler of the year. Glendal Whitney was a unanimous pick for this honor.
Spring sports parent/player meeting
A player/parent meeting for those interested in spring sports will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 1 in the BHS upper gym.
Free sports physicals
The Belton Booster Club and the Belton Athletic Department are sponsoring "Free Physical Night" beginning at 6 p.m.Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Belton High School Freshman Center. Athletes are encouraged to attend and arrive early.
The physicals are for athletes entering 8th through 12th grade in the fall of 2009. Physical forms can be obtained from the High School Athletic Director's office, the nurse's office at Yeokum and the Freshman Center.
All physical forms must be signed by a parent or guardian prior to check-in; students will not be seen by the doctor without parental consent.

Whitney wins state title
Congratulations to Belton wrestlers on their state tournament finishes. Glendal Whitney won the state championship at 189; Taylor Powers was runner-up at 145; and Derrick Fenzl finished seventh in the 140-pound class.
Pirates qualify four for state wrestling tourney
The Belton Wrestling team hosted the district tournament the weekend of Feb. 14 and put forth a strong showing, qualifying four wrestlers for the state tournament.
The Pirates were led by Glen Whitney, who won the 189 district championship. Whitney improved his season record to 44-1 in the process. The Pirates qualified three others for the state tourney, as well. Deric Fenzl finished second at 140; Taylor Powers finished third in 145; and Grant White finished fourth at heavyweight. Powers battled back after a tough loss in the semis to earn the trip to state, while White overcame a first-round loss, and avenged three of his season losses to qualify.
As a team, the Pirates finished fifth in the district.
The state tournament is Feb. 19-21 in Columbia, Mo.
Wrestlers record 18th consecutive winning season
The Belton Pirate Wrestling team sealed its 18th straight winning season by defeating Raytown and Raytown South Feb. 4, by scores of 55-13 and 52-23, respectively. The night had many bright spots for the Pirate matmen. All three seniors, Taylor Powers, Jerrell Merren, and Tyler Catanzaro, were victorious on their senior night. Also, junior Deric Fenzl picked up his 100th career victory for the Pirates. He now stands 101-26 on his career, and 33-3 for the year. The Pirates' dominance continued in the match with No. 2 ranked Glendal Whitney improving his record to 36-0 on the season. Other winners included Dakota Croft, Josh Knight, Dominique Neverdusky, Kyle Watts, Jesse Archer, Jimmy Mann, and Josh Bruce. The Pirates will host the district tournament on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14. Friday's matches begin at 6 p.m.; Saturday's at 10 a.m.
Lady Pirates extend streak with win in Louisburg tourney
The Lady Pirates extended their winning streak to three games after their Jan. 26 56-47 win in the first round of the Louisburg Tournament against Osawatomie. Kelsey Simmons set a career-high, scoring 25 points and hitting five 3-pointers, while also collecting five assists and five steals. Precious Vassol also had a good night, scoring 16, grabbing seven rebounds, getting five steals, and four assists.
Strength training clinic scheduled
A strength training clinic is planned for all Belton School District student athletes in grades seven through nine from 3-4:30 p.m. Friday, May 8.
This hands-on clinic will teach athletes proper lifting technique while focusing on the skills that will be used during the summer weight sessions. The clinic is free of charge and will take place in the high school weight room. Contact Eric Scherfenberg, 348-1529 or Kevin Keeton, 348-2720 for additional information.
Varsity football team camp set for June 5-7
The varsity football team will attend a team camp this year at Central Methodist University. This is open to all players 10th-12th grade. The camp will run the weekend of June 5-7 on the university's campus. The cost is $100 per camper. To register contact Coach Kevin Keeton at the high school, 348-2720.
Swimmers compete in first dual meet
The Lady Pirate Swimmers had their first dual meet on Tuesday Jan. 6. Ranking 3rd out of six teams, they crushed St. Pius (128-122), William Chrisman (160-76), and Truman High School (135-97) and lost to Lee’s Summit and Lee’s Summit North.

Lady Pirates return to winning ways
The Lady Pirates basketball team was coming off a disappointing three-game losing streak, but put together its best game of the young season Dec. 11 at Grandview. The girls came in with a new-found focus and were aggressive on defense and took a 40-23 lead at halftime. In the scond half, they extended their lead and cruised to a 70-35 victory. Leading the way were Hannah Knoll, 19 points; Kelsey Simmons, 12; and Danielle Wiese 10. The Lady Pirates will host their first two home games Dec. 15-16 versus Fort Osage and Westport.
Football players named to All-County team
Several Pirates were recently named to the All Cass County team. Those honored included: Casey Lewis, linebacker; Tyler Burks, defensive back; Kyle Becraft, defensive line; Cody Coovert, offensive line; and Chad Henderson, tight end.
Lewis earns all-state honors
Congratulations to Belton senior linebacker Casey Lewis, who has been named to the first team of the All-State football squad.
Wrestlers compete hard at Ray-Pec
The Pirate wrestlers took on their cross-town rival, Ray-Pec, on Dec. 3. The exciting dual was a back-and-forth affair the entire night. The dual kicked off with 189 pounder Glen Whitney winning by fall, giving the Pirates a 6-0 lead. The Panthers then took a 12-6 lead before the Pirates won consecutive victories by fall by Dakota Croft and Josh Knight at 103 pounds and 112 pounds, respectively. However, Belton would surrender the lead and pull within 6 before the final match off wins by Deric Fenzl, Jerrell Merren, and Tyler Catanzaro. The Pirates fell 45-33, but took away many good things from the night. JV winners were Aaron Johnson, Nick Taylor, Ricky Cornwell, and Darrione Rodgers, The varsity team is back in action this weekend at the Helias (Jefferson City) Kickoff Classic.
Football players earn postseason awards
Casey Lewis, first team defense, co-defensive player of the year; Tyler Burks, second team defense, honorable mention offense; Cody Coovert, second team offense; Glen Whitney, second team offense. Earning honorable mention defense awards included Micah Willard, Kyle Becraft, Kendric King, and Josh Gonzalez.

Girls basketball team starts season with a win
The Lady Pirates(1-0) got off to a great start Dec. 1 in the first round of the Fort Osage Tournament versus a big rival in Ray-Pec. Our girls played a great first half and were up 28-13 at the half. Halfway through the 3rd quarter, the Pirates had stretched their lead to 20 points and went on to attain a 59-43 win. This is the first time Belton has ever won in the first round of this tournament. The Lady Pirates were very balanced in scoring with four players scoring 10 or more points. Kelsey Simmons and Precious Vassol had 13 points each, Danyelle Wiese had 11, and Shannon Ford had 10(10-12 shooting from the free throw line.) Precious also had 6 rebounds, 6 steals, and 4 assists on the night. Calli Porter and Precious scored their first "varsity" points of their Lady Pirate careers.
Postseason volleyball honors
The Lady Pirates volleyball team is represented with four Suburban All-Conference selections. Senior Claire Sylvara and sophomore Courtney Cornell both received second team all-conference honors, while sophomores Desiree Johnson and Sarah McMilian were each awarded honorable mention.
District soccer tournament begins Nov. 3
The Pirates will enter the District 13 soccer championships at 7 p.m., Monday, Nov. 3, when they face the third-seed Ray-Pec Panthers. The Pirates enter the tourney as the sixth seed. The tournament will be held at Rockhurst High School's Dasta Stadium.

Volleyball team finishes third in conference
The volleyball team beat Fort Osage in two straignt games, leaving the Pirates with a third place finish in conference. The Lady Pirates finished the regular season with a winning record for the first time in 14 years since they competed in the small conference.
Volleyball to begin district tourney action
The Belton High School volleyball team will begin district tournament play at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27 at Lee's Summit West High School. The Pirates enter the tournament seeded sixth. In the first round, they'll face third-seeded Lee's Summit North.
Golfers at state
Belton High School golfers Maddie Person and Callie Porter participated in the state golf tournament Oct. 20-21 at Silo Ridge Country Club in Bolivar. Person shot a 204, good for a 101st place tie. Porter tied for 99th place, shooting a 203.
Volleyball team in close weekend matches
The Lady Pirates played some close matches in the Harrisonville tournament the weekend of Oct. 18. The Pirates defeated Odessa, 25-12, 25-21 and split with Nevada, 20-25-25, 25-20. Based on overall points, the Pirates won the pool and advanced into the bracket. The team lost to Springfield Hillcrest, 22-25, 25-21, 23-25. They rebounded to beat Kansas City East Christian and then lost a close match to Nevada, 30-28, 24-26, 22-25. During the tourney, the Lady Pirates played 10 straight games without rest.
Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Cornell led the team with 42 kills during the tournament, and set a school record with 17 kills in the final match of the tournament. In addition, she set a school record of 25 digs in the same match. Desiree Johnson led Belton for attacking percentages with 29 kills and seven errors on 62 total attacks for a .355 hitting percentage and a .468 kill percentage. Claire Sylvara and Haley Coovert served 98 percent, while McKenzie Brown served 97 percent.

The Belton boys soccer team won a double-overtime game against Platte County Oct. 14. The winning goal was scored by Steven Campbell with one minute left in the scond overtime.

Volleyball team defeats Ray-South
The Lady Pirates volleyball team defeated Raytown South Oct. 9 in straight games; 25-17, 25-21. The team has won six of its last eight games. Sophomore outside hitter Courtney Cornell led the team in kills with seven, but the best attacking percentages on the night came from sophomore middle hitter Desiree Johnson and senior middle hitter Claire Sylvara. Johnson had five kills, zero errors on 12 attacks for a .417 hitting percentage and Sylvara accumulated four kills with zero errors on 10 total attacks for a .400 hitting percentage. Sophomore Haley Coovert led the way defensively with 13 digs. It was yet another strong overall team performance, with a 2.2 passer rating and a 96 percent serving percentage on the night. Four girls did not miss a serve: McKenzie Brown, Karlee Bobbitt, Courtney Cornell and Haley Coovert. The team will celebrate senior night and its last home match of the season Oct. 16 against Raytown.

Lady Pirates get 20th win
The Lady Pirates softball team brought its season record to 20-4 with a 3-0 win over Raytown. Ashley Cobern recorded seven strikeouts for the Pirates. Jessica Campbell sparked the offense, with a homerun and two RBI. The Pirates were a perfect 8-0 at home this season.
Softball team blanks Chrisman
The Pirates softball team notched another shutout victory Sept. 30, defeating William Chrisman 4-0. The win brings their record to 19-4. Ashley Cobern and Ali Swaggart both recorded two hits and Melissa Barnes swiped four bases.
Volleyball team improves record
Congratulations to the Lady Pirates volleyball team on its Sept. 30 win over Fort Osage. The Pirates won the match 25-6, 25-17. Their record now stands at 7-9 on the season. The squad will face its toughest match of the season on Oct. 2, when it hosts defending state champs Lee's Summit West.
Lady Pirates shutout North Kansas City
The Pirates' softball team spread North Kansas City 10-0 Sept. 29. Melissa Barnes, Ashley Cobern, and Jen Harrington each had multiple hits on the day. Barnes, Carly Jo Scott, Jessica Campbell, and Cobern each scored multiple runs, and Campbell and Cobern racked up six RBI between them. Kelsey Schifferdecker recorded 10 strikeouts.
Pirate golfers finish second at conference
The Belton girls golf team competed in the conference tournament Sept. 29 at Paradise Point's The Outlaw. The Pirates finished second behind Lee's Summit West. Callie Porter led the way with a 96, finishing fourth overall which placed her on first team all conference. Keri Dickson shot a 103 for second team all conference (seventh overall) Maddie Person shot 117, second team all conference, tying her for 10th. Kelsey Maurer shot 129, honorable mention all conference, finishing 15th overall. The team total was 445.
Winning streak continues
The Lady Pirates softball team extended its winning streak to eight Sept. 26 with an 8-1 win over Lee's Summit West. With a season record of 17-4, the Lady Pirates enter the week 5-1 in the conference. Leading the way against Lee's Summit West was pitcher Ashley Cobern. Other highlights included: Ashley Cobern, three hits; Ali Swaggart, two hits, four RBI; Jessica Campbell, two runs; Melissa Barnes, two stolen bases.
Softball shuts out Fort Osage
The Lady Pirates enjoyed an 8-0 shutout win over Fort Osage on Sept. 25. Brittany Cole had two stolen bases with Ali Swaggart having three RBI. Freshman pitcher Kelsey Schifferdecker recorded 13 strikouts enroute to the win.
Softball team defeats Oak Park
The Lady Pirates enjoyed another great win against Oak Park Sept. 24, coming away with a 2-1 victory. Carly Jo Scott and Jessica Campbell had the only two hits of the game for the Lady Pirates.
Lady Pirates win in dramatic fashion
BHS' softball team came from behind in the seventh inning for a 3-2 victory over Liberty Sept. 23. Carly Jo Scott hit a two-run triple in the seventh to tie the game, and Jessica Campbell forced an error to complete the come-from-behind victory. Ashley Cobern recorded a six strikeout performance on the mound. The Lady Pirates are now 14-4.
Softball team takes third in Pleasant Hill tourney; defeats Ray-South
Congratulations to the Lady Pirates softball team for taking thid place in the Pleasant Hill Tourament the weekend of Sept. 20. During the tourney, the squad fell to Pleasant Hill, but defeated Clinton, Staley, and Grain Valley.
On Sept. 22, the team defeated Raytown South, with Jessica Campbell going 3 for 4 on the game. Other standouts were Jen Harrington and Ali Swaggart who each drove in three runs.
The Lady Pirates' record stands at 13-4 on the year.
Golfers split with NKC, Grandview
The Belton girls golf team lost to North Kansas City on Sept. 16 at Clay Crest Golf Course, 238-245. Maddie Person was medalist for the match, with a 50. The course is a par 36.
The Pirates defeated Grandview 210-239 on Sept. 18 at Grand Summit's par 36 course. Maddie Person was medalist with a 43. Other Belton scores were Callie Porter, 44; Nikki Huchison, 61; and Kelsey Maurer, 62.

The Lady Pirates golf team placed fifth out of 20 schools in the Sept. 15 Bill Jonas Tournament hosted by Truman/Crisman at Drumm Farm. Kelsey Maurer led the way with a personal best of 99. She was followed by Callie Porter, 100; Maddie Person, 102; Keri Dickson, 104; and Martika Gravette, 139.
Yeokum volleyball teams undefeated
The volleyball teams played Center on Sept. 11 and Grandview on Sept. 15. Both the A and B teams were victorious, keeping their undefeated mark unblemished.

Golfers defeat Ray-South, Lee's Summit
The Lady Pirates golf team defeated Raytown South 231-256 on Sept. 9 with medalist honors being shared by Maddie Person and Callie Porter who each shot 50. Other Belton scores: Kelsey Maurer, 67; Martika Gravette, 64; and Nikki Hutchison, 69.
On Sept. 10, the squad defeated Lee's Summit at Shamrock Golf Club, 202-204. Medalist honors were shared by Callie Porter and Keri Dickson who each shot a 48. Other varsity scores included: Maddie Person, 52; Kelsey Maurer, 54; and Martika Gravette, 54. Competing for the JV were Nikki Hutchison, 55; and Ashley Fyffe, 58.
The varsity squad travels to Drumm's Farm on Sept. 15 to compete in the fourth annual Bill Jonas (Chrisman/Truman) Girls Golf Invitational.
Another win for softball team
The Lady Pirates picked up another win Sept. 10, this time coming from behind to defeat Lee's Summit West. Kelsey Schifferdecker pitched a complete game victory for the 9-6 win. Jessica Campbell had four hits, and Brittany Cole had two. The team is now 7-1 on the season.
Softball team defeats Warrensburg
The Lady Pirates continued their winning ways on Sept. 9 with a 12-1 six-inning win over Warrensburg. Brittany Cole struck out 10 batters in 4 1/3 innings, Jessica Campbell had three hits with a double and a homerun for two RBI. Cole had two hits, four stolen bases, two RBI and scored three runs. Melissa Barnes and Carley Jo Scott tripled.
Lady Pirates blank Ray-South
The Lady Pirates softball team shutout Raytown South Sept. 5, 10-0. Melissa Barnes had three hits and scored three runs, one triple and two stolen bases. Carly Jo Scott had two hits and two RBI, Ashley Cobern had 2 RBI, Ali Swaggart had two hits and two RBI, and Rebecca Berger had two hits. Cobern was the winning pitcher, combining with Kelsey Schifferdecker for the three-hit shutout.
Lady Pirate golfers tee off 08 campaign
Belton hosted Grandview and Ray-Pec at Eagles Landing on Sept. 4. Ray-Pec finished first with a 199. Belton's 218 was good for second, and Grandview was third with a 254. Maddie Person was the medalist with a 41. Other Belton scores: Callie Porter, 49; Kelsey Maurer, 59; Nikki Hutchison, 69; Ashley Fiffe, 69; and Amber Pope, 72.
On Sept. 2, the Lady Pirates finished sixth out of 15 squads in the Blue Springs South tournament. Keri Dickson finished eighth, with an 84. Callie Porter finished 9th, with an 86. About 75 girls competed in the event.
Football team opens with romp over Platte County
The Pirates' varsity football team defeated Platte County Friday, Aug. 29, 28-0. The defense played well throughout the game. After a tight first half, the Pirates pulled away in the second half, behind the running of senior Tyler Burks (16 carries, 165 yards) and junior Glen Whitney (16 carries, 132 yards).
The Pirates will travel to Oak Park Friday, Sept. 5 to face the Northmen. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at the North Kansas City district stadium at North Kansas City High School.
Softball team goes 4-1 in tourney
The Lady Pirates opened their season in fine fashion by going 4-1 in the Greater Kansas City 24-team tournament at Adair Park in Independence last week. Tournament highlights included:
- The Lady Pirates won the opener 10-0 over William Chrisman. Ashley Cobern was the winning pitcher throwing a one-hit shutout. The Pirates had three hits from Carly Jo Scott and Erica Hazlerigg.
- In the second game, the Pirates defeated St. Joe Central, 6-4. Brittany Cole was the winning pitcher. Jennifer Harrington hit a double and homerun.
- The third game was won by the Pirates 4-1 in extra innings over Staley. Kelsey Schifferdecker was the winning pitcher, surrendering four hits with five strikeouts. Ali Swaggart had two hits.
- The Pirates lost their first game of the year in the semi-finals, falling 1-4 to Platte County. Melissa Barnes scored the only Pirate run.
- The Lady Pirates came back in the third-place game to defeat Lee's Summit North, 1-0, on Friday night. The win came to Kelsey Schifferdecker, who pitched a four-hit shutout. Mo Barnes scored the lone Pirate run.
- The team's home opener is against Fort Osage at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Wrestling 'Open Mats'
Wrestling open mats will be held from 4:15-5:15 p.m. Tuesdays throughout September and October. Any student interested in wrestling this winter is invited.
